Frequently asked questions

What do I need to bring?

A full list will be emailed to you on booking, but the basics required are warm, comfortable quick drying clothing, good quality walking boots with ankle support, wet weather gear, a sleeping bag, a day pack and a rifle and ammunition.

I'm from overseas and don't have a gun license, can I still hunt with you?

Yes. The use of a firearm is allowed in NZ law as long as you have the 'immediate supervision' of a fully licensed person beside you who is not carrying a firearm. As you will be guided at all times these rules apply. However all clients will be given a full safety briefing on the use of firearms before the commencement of your trip and it remains up to the discretion of your guide to assess your safety with the firearm before use. Safety is very important to our operation.

What will the weather be like?

Expect anything from snow to hot sun depending on the time of year. This is why packing layers of clothing is important. Remember the colder it is, the better the hut feels after!

Do I have to bring my own rifle?

No. You can hire one on request. Please contact us for a price.

Can I bring a bow?

Of course! We do recommend one on one hunting with a bow to help your chances of getting an animal. Please discuss with us when booking.

What can I expect?

On arrival at Mokai Station, your guide will greet you and check that you have all that you need. He will then run through a safety briefing, a plan for your trip and you can ask him any questions that you may have. Then it's off to your first night's accommodation to unpack, have a cuppa and make a plan for your first hunt. Get ready to settle in to the peace and quiet of the hills and totally immerse yourself in having an enjoyable break away tracking your way around the hills stalking some deer! To get you up those hills we feed you great kiwi home-style 'kai' (food).

I'm not very fit and / or getting on in years, does this mean I can't book with you?

Of course not! We can cater to different fitness levels. We can offer shorter hunts in easier terrain. One hut is accessible by our Can_Am and or 4WD so has easy access. Miracle Hut (Joe's Hut) doesn't have this type of access as it's over the range so the client will need to carry a pack if going by foot. However there is the option of booking a helicopter to get you and your gear in and out of this hut which we can arrange for you. *Please note that the helicopter cost would be an extra. Contact us for a quote.

If I don't want to hunt can we still visit Mokai Station? Can I bring my family?

Yes. Although Mokai Red Deer Hunting has been predominately set up as a hunting business, you can book a stay and spend some time in the hills going on walks, taking pictures, seeing wild deer and maybe even cooking some camp oven bread. There is some cell phone coverage at the huts, but you don't need to tell the kids that! Just enjoy the break away. All trips must be accompanied by a guide so you will have a safe, informative break away.
